Choose the workload first
Web browsing, office work and streaming do not require the same hardware as video editing, CAD or recent games. Write down the two hardest jobs the laptop will do. That stops you paying for headline specifications that never help, while missing a weak component that does.

Processor names do not tell the whole story
Intel, AMD, Apple and Qualcomm all sell several generations and performance tiers. Two laptops carrying a similar family badge can have different core designs, power limits and cooling. Look for independent tests of the exact laptop, particularly sustained performance, fan noise and battery life. Short benchmark bursts can flatter a machine that slows during longer work.
RAM: capacity matters more than buzzwords
8GB can still handle basic tasks, but it leaves little headroom once browsers, video calls and background apps are open together. For a new Windows or macOS laptop intended to last, 16GB is the safer baseline. Consider 32GB for large creative projects, virtual machines or professional workloads. If the memory is soldered, the amount you buy is usually the amount you keep.
Storage: check both size and replaceability
A 512GB SSD gives most people a workable balance. Games, raw photos and video fill it quickly, so 1TB can be worth buying when the price difference is sensible. Confirm whether the SSD can be replaced and whether opening the laptop affects support. Cloud storage helps with files but does not replace fast local space for installed software.
The screen is not a minor specification
For a typical 13- to 16-inch laptop, Full HD-class resolution is adequate; higher resolution makes text and images sharper but can increase power use. Brightness matters if you work near windows or outdoors. Around 300 nits is a basic indoor target, while brighter panels are more flexible. Creators should check measured sRGB or wider-gamut coverage rather than trusting words such as “vivid”.
Battery claims need context
Manufacturer figures use controlled tests and rarely match a mixed working day. Screen brightness, performance mode, video calls and browser choice all change the result. Independent testing of the exact configuration is more useful. Also check USB-C charging support and charger size if portability matters.
Before you buy
- Search the full model number; retailers sometimes sell exclusive variants.
- Confirm keyboard layout, ports, webcam quality and whether charging uses USB-C.
- Check the delivered price, warranty and returns rather than comparing ticket prices alone.
- Read measured reviews of the exact chassis, because heat and noise cannot be judged from a component list.
