Match resolution to size and performance
Resolution affects both sharpness and the workload on the graphics hardware. At a desk, 1080p is most convincing on smaller screens and makes high frame rates easier. 1440p offers noticeably more detail without the full performance cost of 4K. A 4K display makes sense when image detail, a larger screen or console use matters more than maximum frame rate.

Refresh rate: useful only as part of the system
A 144Hz screen can show up to 144 updates each second, which makes motion and input feel smoother than 60Hz when the game produces enough frames. Moving beyond 144–180Hz mainly benefits fast competitive play and a system that can sustain very high frame rates. For slower games, image quality may matter more than chasing the largest number.
Response-time claims need independent testing
Manufacturers often advertise a best-case response time under an aggressive overdrive mode. That mode can create bright or dark trails of its own. Look for measured response behaviour across the refresh-rate range, not just the box claim. Input lag and pixel response are also different measurements.
IPS, VA and OLED
IPS panels commonly provide good viewing angles and consistent colour, but dark-room contrast varies. VA panels can deliver deeper blacks, though some show darker smearing in motion. OLED provides excellent black levels and very fast pixel response, but costs more and needs sensible care around long-running static elements. The panel label is a starting point, not a verdict on an individual model.
VRR and ports
Variable refresh rate synchronises the display with changing frame output to reduce tearing and judder. Confirm the supported range and whether it works over the connection you will use. PC buyers should check DisplayPort and HDMI capabilities. Console buyers should verify the exact resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR combinations supported over HDMI; “HDMI 2.1” alone does not explain every implemented feature.
HDR and brightness
An HDR logo does not guarantee convincing HDR. Useful performance depends on peak brightness, black level, colour capability and—on LCD monitors—the quality of local dimming. A monitor that merely accepts an HDR signal may look little better than SDR. Read measurements and scene-based reviews.
Before you buy
- Check your GPU or console outputs and the cable requirements.
- Confirm stand adjustment, VESA mounting, warranty and dead-pixel policy.
- Look for measured motion performance at several refresh rates.
- Compare delivered prices using the full model code; similar names can hide different panels.
